Why the pH of the Hair Products You Use Matters
Our new “Fresh Hair”, hair care collection, showcases each products pH on each bottle. Why is it important to know the pH of your shampoo and conditioner? How does it effect the health of your hair and scalp? Read our blog to find out!
The pH of hair products is important because it can affect the health and appearance of your hair and scalp. The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is, ranging from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline), with 7 being neutral.
The natural pH of hair is slightly acidic, typically ranging from 4.5 to 5.5. When hair products have a pH that is close to the natural pH of hair, they can help maintain the health of hair by keeping the cuticle layer of the hair smooth and flat. This makes the hair feel soft, look shiny, and remain strong.
Hair color, smoothing treatments, hard water and even environmental stress, will open the cuticle so it’s important to use hair care that helps to restore a pH where hair is happiest.
Using hair products with a pH that is too high (alkaline) can cause the cuticle to swell and lift, making making the hair rough, dull, and more prone to damage like breakage and split ends. On the other hand, products with a pH that is too low (acidic) may also have negative effects on the hair, such as making it feel dry and brittle.
Therefore, using hair products, like our newest hair care collection FRESH HAIR, with a pH that is balanced and compatible with the natural pH of hair can help maintain the overall health and appearance of your hair.
